Director Tony Scott ("True Romance", "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3") is set to direct a biopic of Somen "Steve" Banerjee, the man who created Chippendales Clubs in the 80s when male strip clubs was phenomenon.
According to Variety, the biopic will follow the rise and fall of Banerjee, who bought a failed Los Angeles club named "Destiny II" and turned it into a nightclub, which would later evolves into Chippendales Clubs and expanded to New York's Club Magique, London, Hamburg, Philadelphia and Florida, and extensive shows tour internationally. After bringing on choreographer/director Steve Merrit to polish the all-male dance troupe, Banerjee became so rich that he turned unreasonably competitive and paranoid. Banerjee hired a hitman to murder the choreographer when negotiations went sour. He eventually pleaded guilty to attempted arson, racketeering, and murder for hire, and died in jail awaiting trial.
Scott will produce the biopic through his Scott Free banner, with David Permut's Permut Presentations, Firoz Nadiadwala and Steve Longi. Executive producer is Peter Saphier, who previously co-produced "Scarface."
Screenwriter Lisa Schrager "Pay the Girl" wrote the script for the movie by adapting a manuscript written by Rodney Sheldon.
