Co-Presidents of Production of DreamWorks Studios Mark Sourian and Holly Bario announced today that the studio has acquired the rights to the young adult book series "Wicked," according to Business Wire.
The Benay brothers (Aaron and Matthew) who wrote the "1906" script for Pixar, Warner Bros, has been hired to write the adaptation, which The Gotham Group will produce.
The story revolves around a young woman who learns she is a descendent of a powerful coven of witches. Complications arise when she falls in love with a boy who turns out to be a member of a rival coven sworn to destroy her family.
The five-book series "Wicked," was written by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie. The first "Wicked" includes the novels Witch, published in 2002, and Curse, published in 2003. "Wicked 2" includes Legacy and Spellbound, both published in 2003. The fifth book, "Resurrection," was published in July this year.
Mark Sourian was quoted as saying, ""Wicked" has all the elements for a great movie - adventure, mystery, star-crossed lovers, bitter enemies, and the supernatural," "Aaron and Matthew came in with an intriguing take on the books and a story that we feel will really speak to all audiences."
