After stepping away from "The Tourist" last fall over creative differences, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck stepped back into the director's shoes to direct the spy thriller.
Jolie will play a female Interpol agent who draws an unwitting American tourist (Depp) into her attempt to locate a criminal who was once her lover.
The movie, a remake of the 2005 French spy thriller Anthony Zimmer, was originally developed for Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron, with director Bharat Nalluri planning to direct. But the three have stepped away and are replaced by Sam Worthington, Angelina Jolie. Then Sam Worthington too left the project last fall, and finally replaced by Johnny Depp.
Graham King's GK Films which is financing and will be distributing the movie will also produce with Tim Headington, Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman. Christopher McQuarrie and Jeffrey Nachmanoff rewrote the script originally written by Julian Fellowes.
The movie is scheduled to start production in spring.
