Chinese artists are winning awards internationally as well. The Chinese film "Weaving Girl" has grabbed the second highest prize at the closing ceremony of the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival Monday.
"Weaving Girl," directed by Wang Quan'an and staring actress Yu Nan, tells about the life struggles of a textile factory worker. The film did exceeding well in Montreal, winning both the special Grand Prix Award from the Jury, which is the runner-up prize, as well as the International film critics prize.
Festival director Serge Losique spoke highly of the film, and added that he is confident about the rosy future of the Chinese film industry.
"Death Dowry", which has mainland actress Tao Hong performing the lead role as well as supervising the production, qualified to join in the First Film World Competition. But unfortunately the picture left the event empty-handed.
The official documentary for 2008 Beijing Olympics, "The Everlasting Flame", was shown as the closing film. Festival director said the documentary "shows a perfect mixture of cinema and sport."
The top prize, the Grand Prix of the Americas, was won by French director Tony Gatlif's "Freedom". It also received the public award for the most popular film, which is chosen by the audience.
The Montreal World Film Festival ran from August the 27th to September the 7th, and showed about 400 films from 70 countries and regions.
